Is this a scam?
Someone sent my wife a $3500 check from south africa with a letter stating I won a $900,000 drawing. They said the 3500 is to cover the taxes. They want me to cash the check and they will make arrangements to give me the money. Is there any way this can be a scam? Would I be liable for this? How would they make money off of me cashing this?

Don't deposit the check. It's no good. Tear up the letter etc.
2 :
It is a SCAM and let me explain it to you, since it happened to me and I investigated it. The check you got is from a real company (stolen info). You will cash the check, and you will get the cash. Then the company overseas want you to take that "free money" and wire it to them. They say you will soon get your big lottery winnings. OK, so here is what will happen to you for real. The bank in which you cashed that "real" check from will send you a letter telling you there were insufficient funds
3 :
Total scam. They'll ask you to cash the check and give them the money asap. Meanwhile, the check bounces and you are responsible for that, plus any charges your bank may have due to the fraudulent check.
4 :
Scam! for sure you did not enter a drawing so how san you win one?
5 :
Of course it's a scam. When you deposit the check, you will be instructed to wire them some money to process your winnings. Of course, you will never see the winnings, and that $3500 check will eventually be returned to you as invalid.
6 :
Jill S. is totally right. This scam was just on Oprah. The girl even went to her bank to make sure it was a legitimate check and they said it was. Low and behold the check’s fraudulent and this single mother is out of a ton of money. There’s nothing you can do so just trash it!
7 :
DON"T DO IT, yes it is a scam, the check will not clear the bank and you will be liable. My company had 15 of these checks presented to our bank. The check is fraudulent. It is a very popular scam, they are hoping the check clears your account before it bounces back. For some reason they use the $3,500 amount all the time.
8 :
my Advice: Don't deal with anyone from a foreign country or Accept checks from strangers and never use wire/bank transfer services.. you risk losing your $$ and your mind.
9 :
Scam!! If you deposit that check your bank could possibly tell you that it is a fraudulent account. and although they may not press charges they will close your account and charge you a processing fee for closing it. Don't do anything with it except throw it away or give it to the cops. IF you want to verify call the bank its drawn of off and ask them to verify it is a valid check. the same thing happened to my sister and she deposited it in her bank of America checking account which she had for 10 years and they closed her account as soon as the other bank sent the check back even though she never even had so much as a negative balance the bank was of no help to her and instead of treating her like the victim she was they treated her like she stole the check. Even though she brought them the letter and that was a united states check
10 :
Yes it's a scam. Yes you would be liable - to you bank eventually. They make money off of you: 1) because you end up paying them something drawn on a bad check. 2) you have also told them all you bank account information to do with what they please.

Engagement ring on his birthday?
We've been together 2 years, and engaged 6 months ago, I keep a raw diamond from his proposal, which he found in the diamond mine when he work in South Africa, but I know he's saving money right now to make the diamond into a ring. So here's my question, I haven't wear the engagement ring yet, but I would like to get him a engagement ring (or promise ring) on his birthday, is it appropriate? do guys like to wear ring before they get married?

It depends on the guy really.
2 :
I think if he loves you then he will be happy with the ring and wear it, because he will want everyone to know you're getting married. =]
3 :
i got my fiance one and he was happy. if he loves you then he is going to be happy
4 :
It's a lovely ideal the only thing do you think he would want to wear the ring when you have not got your ring made yet! Maybe you could buy it and say we will both put the rings on together, ( I just hope it would not make him unhappy or put pressure on him that your is not done yet)
5 :
ya it is possible
6 :
no guys don't normally wear rings before they are married. save youry money for the actual wedding rather than that. just wait til you're married to get him a ring.

How much does it cost to travel the world within 3-4 months?
How much does it cost to travel the world within 3-4 months?
Me and my girlfriend just graduated from college. We plan to make enough money for us to travel the world within 3-4months. We will probably spend 1 month in North America, 2 weeks in South America, 2 weeks in Western Europe, 3 weeks in Eastern Europe, 1 week in Middle East, 2 weeks in North Africa and 1 week in India. We plan to leave in the cheapest model and eat cheap but clean food. We will camp wherever we can and avoid fly when there is a cheaper way. How much money do we need?

One week in India? One week in Middle East? You'll only just have arrived and changed your currency when it will be time to leave again. You don't want to spend your whole entire trip at airports. I think you are trying to do too much in too little time, and in your plan most of your available money will be eaten up with travel fares and visas, because you will be constantly on the move. You are travelling to see the world, and need enough time to see it. I'd recommend you decide on a destination and spend one week in each of 4 different places there. Last year I did this in Australia, one week in each of 4 states, and I'd need more visits to see all the rest. If you take South America, that might translate as one week in each of four countries. Same with Western Europe. Interesting, but still only scratching the surface. For cost, calculate the air fares and treble it. That will give you a starting point. Even if you find cheaper ways to travel, it leaves you more for food and accommodation. Air fares aren't always the dearest - in Australia, to get to one place I went would have taken 2 days by bus. By air I was there in 2 hours, giving me more time there, and it also cost a lot less. Sounds like fun - just don't cut it so tight.

I guess around $40k USD

World Cup like the Olympics is just pure propaganda?
World Cup like the Olympics is just pure propaganda?
Who Agrees? It exploits the people of Africa. I love sport and all but all these athletes making money and being bad influences on kids make me upset. Being an African I think the world cup is bad for South Africa. South Africa is in debt and the world cup will put them further in debt. World Cup fans are just whores to corporations. I don't hate football. It was one of the few sports around when i was a kid. I prefer basketball and karate but i don't mind football. I just hate how ultra-capitalist football has become and how it exploits people especially in the 3rd world and people in 3rd world nation end up worshiping FIFA. Its disgusting. Its like a slave being a big fan of slave owners. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4cDkquPRgk&feature=related

The World Cup is setting the stage to demonstrate the most convoluted exhibition of officiating. I think there is politics involved and this casts a nebulous shadow on the game. I'd rather play foosball (table soccer) than watch a soccer game.
2 :
For most of the world it is like Superbowl and the NBA playoffs rolled into one, it is only in the US that it is like the Olympic sports for middle class children. To play you only need a ball and a piece of flat ground so it is the game of choice for children in poor countries.
3 :
Don't blame FIFA if africa does not want to host the worldcup There are plenty others would love to host the greates show on earth and it's not that host nation won't make money I am sure africa will generate more money from this in long run and it's not bad influence on kids I mean how can you say that it's a sport!

What? by common sense, the world cup is greatly benefiting south Africa from an economical point of view.... also, it was Africa the one who requested to organize the world cup... it wasn't Europe or south America the ones who decided that.. I think you're very ungrateful, hosting an event such as a world cup is something any south American or European nation would love to do.

USA is in debt, Canada is in debt, Greece is in debt ,Brazil is in Debt, China is in debt and so is basically every country on the world, so we should halt the entertainment. We should deny the S. African's to show their pride because they are in debt? Some South african's were against it, yet most match attendees are S. Africans , BLACK for that matter. If they hated it so much they obviously wouldn't be the most attendees. FIFA is not Walmart, I think your mixing up the two. If the balls weren't made where they were very few countries would have access to soccer balls & jerseys. Then what? Deny people fun? FIFA is not there to fricken solve S. sorry to say, this is a scam to get you to send them money and to get your bank account information. You would never see any 'winnings' once they had everything they could get from you. Legitimate lotteries don't require you to send bank information or work via 'bank transfers' - they would simply send you a check. Do not reply and do not send them any money or personal information. remember - if you didn't enter a lottery you didn't win a lottery. Part-time job for an engineering student?
Part-time job for an engineering student?
I am a 2nd year Electronic Engineering student at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. However, as of late I have become more and more strapped for cash. Are there any jobs either in the town itself or available online that I can take to make extra money, bearing in mind the fact that Engineering is a very time-consuming course and that I have no personal transport?
