How much cost difference is there between backpacking one continent vs another?
How much cost difference is there between backpacking one continent vs another?
I am interested in taking a 2-3 month backpacking trip this summer. I intend to live frugally and buy only essentials, but money will still be a factor. Are certain continents much more expensive to backpack than others? For example, how much cost variance is there between Africa, South America, and Europe? I'm an American, in case the USD conversion to the different currencies makes a significant difference. Any information or comparisons are much appreciated! Thanks!

Europe is definitely the most expensive continent to travel through, of course the Euro is worth more than our dollars but hotels and transportation is also naturally more expensive than in Africa and South America. The other major difference to consider is transportation. Most of Africa doesn't have a very reliable train or bus system, and parts of South America have very spotty bus service. So if you aren't planning to fly between countries, it will be much harder to get a train or bus between them.

What Do You make of these lines from Michael Vaughan?
What Do You make of these lines from Michael Vaughan?
"I do have a problem when the likes of Jonathan Trott (play for England), and (Craig) Kieswetter, who's played for the South African Under-19s. I think in Trott's case he even played for the South Africa A team. "Now that is where I have a problem, that we have almost got a 'ship-in' system of looking at talent, and a lot of them come over for the money. "It's very, very difficult to stop them. I would like to see, in an ideal world, 11 complete Englishmen in the team but I don't think that's ever going to be the case." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12123_6003653,00.html Is he Xenophobic?

he has issues, i won't call it racism but chauvinism or eccentric patriotism. after Vaughan, someone else will call issues with foreign doctors or engineers in england, but how can you get englishmen as doctors and engineers , that's a big Question lol. he should be stopped here itself, england can't have their cake and eat it too. he has no right to preach others, when englishmen have barged in so many countries ruling them and fixing their own quota even in other countries sport. all white SA have origin from england lol and have their quotas.
2 :
It would be better if he think more about upcoming british youngsters and improve them. If foreign grown players are better then surely they will get into the side.
3 :
I very much doubt it's xenophobia, this is a problem that has plagued English sport for many decades. Soccer, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Cricket and just about any other sporting pursuit you wish to name. People have emigrated because they can't get a start in their home country, knowing, once they qualify for selection, the quality of competition is far less. I understand Vaughan's frustration at England not producing players from within their own ranks, but they, like India, have far too many first class teams. It's far too easy to stand out in a poor quality competition, and the cream doesn't always get to rise to the top.
4 :
He is just trying to be in the news and hype.
5 :
I think the day when Britain opened its doors to the world changed a lot of things, Kieswetter for instance has a British mother, so has dual nationality, its up to him to make a decision and the boards to pick who is available. Immigration and integration will always throw up conflict, and countries that people want to come to will obviously produce mixed race generations, meaning more dual nationalities and more choice for those individuals concerned. It was not that long ago that the first Black player represented England, nowadays we could probably field an all West Indian, South African or Indian ethnic originating eleven, and be competitive at a good level.
6 :
yar he is fool. he is acting like afridi. give fool statement after a while to be a part of media talks
7 :
Michael Vaughan didn't seem to have too much of a problem with his South African mate Pietersen playing in the team when he was the captain. Personally I can't see what difference it makes either way. If a player of a certain nationality is qualified to play for another country (for example a South African playing for England) then they should be allowed to play cricket for them.

My best friend was in South Africa for 10 weeks. for the last 2 weeks ive been redoing his bathroom and his room! wallpaper pulling, painting moving a lot of furniture... probably a total of 20 hours of work! last night i stayed up til 2 finishing his bathroom! He came home today and loved it! It was all volunteer work...and his dad and i are tight (im 13). so i really dont expect anything! But my friends dad says hes gonna pay me $50. I dont think i deserve it... and I'm soo confused.. i know it sounds crazy but i feel guilty about the thing. Majority rules i take the money if there are more yes's and dont take it if there are more No's. My decision is with you guys!!! Thanks I give out best answer!!!

Please take the money, the father will be greatly insulted if you don't. Trust me from past experience. You did a great deed, and he wants to thank you for it! :)
2 :
Sounds like you did hard work that they really appreciated. You earned the money fair and square if they want to give it to you. Take it and enjoy. Make sure to say "Thank You"
3 :
Take the money. And yes, its ok to get paid doing something you love! You do deserve the money, especially since your intentions were not to get paid. Keep the same giving spirit as you grow, you'd be surprised at how good things will keep happening to you in return. Don't blow the money though, either save it or buy something that would will last and remind you of your volunteer work.
4 :
Take the money if he offered it. If he hadn't offered it, then that would be OK too.
5 :
Take the money. It sounds like you did way more than $50 of work anyway.

Would it make me a bad person to prefer saving animal rather than people? (long)?
Would it make me a bad person to prefer saving animal rather than people? (long)?
When I was young I wanted to be rich to build hospitals in South America and Africa, be so rich that I could make sure everyone in the planet had something to eat. As I grew older and realized how the world works, I realized this was going to be almost impossible. Even if I did have the money, I could not be in all places at once to make sure it was the poor people benefiting from it. Like welfare now, everyone could apply to get help but the people that would get approved would spend the extra money in non important things. I think that something close to reality would just be buying a large farm and have some kind of animal sanctuary, where I could take animals that people mistreated or animals that were saved but not adopted. I think that people are still capable of providing for themselves, people can communicate, people can learn to work in a planet ruled by humans but other creatures cannot. If a dog has a wound, it may be able to "tell" another dog but that other dog can't do anything about it. Humans can get request human help, animals are at their mercy. But then I think, a poor family in Africa maybe be able to communicate that they're hungry, but that doesn't guarantee that they will get something to eat. I just feel like I have to do something and that helping animals is more within my reach but is it ok to save as many animals as I can rather than much less humans that are already being helped? On a side note: Are those commercial that say to donate a dollar a day for a poor child a scam?

Humans are animals,we are not above nature but part of it.Go ahead, animals have emotions too, they are in need of help. as for your side note : some are scams and some are not. the only way to know if a commercial is a scam or not is to dig up more information about how reliable it is.
3 :
I don't know about the dollar donating thing, but... If you are torn between caring for animals and people, why not try to reconcile your caring nature? Why not work to rescue abused and injured dogs and cats, even older ones, and train them to be therapy or service animals? That way someone who needs it is benefiting from the good health and welfare of the animal. It won't feed families in Africa, but it's certainly a reasonable goal.
4 :
You just need to do what your heart tells you. You may not be able to be at every part of the world at once, but there are also animals in need in every area of the world, so it's really no more of an easier cause once you think about it. But neither one is impossible, you can travel and open your facilities, stay there for a while, so that you can establish how you wan things done, and your bound to find someone in that contry that is willing to stay in your place during your travels to ensure that your goals are carried through. It's really the same thing with animals. You can't be every where at once, but you can work with people that share your interests around the world. And unfortunately, money is an issue, and you would have to have alot of it. Either way your heart is in the right place, and every little bit your able to do really does help.
