What kind of movie would you make in South Africa?

What kind of movie would you make in South Africa?
Seems like only political dramas and comedies are coming out of South Africa. Suppose you had the money and other resources to make a movie in South Africa, what would it be about?

maybe a movie on how they have changed over the years. also one to show how poor their economy is, so other countries can reach out a helping hand.

Voodoo and black magic. Try seeing if you can find these movies...The Serpent and the Rainbow and The Ghost and The Darkness. Not comedy, not political, and very good.

Good question - not sure though, perhaps a humanitarian one is some way, about everyday people living there lives, interacting with others - just a small window of life within the greater whole. One along those lines I think.

We have a lot of scenic places and abundance of wildlife so i would suggest something that has action and includes wild life maybe starting in Capetown and ends in Kruger National Park

If I had the money, I'd make a sci-fi movie loosely based around the recent Uhuru - Night Of The Long Knives conspiracy theory. The heroes would be a multiracial group who battle to save South Africa. It would play out like a combination of Orwells 1984 and the Christian Bale classic, Equilibrium. Another good angle would be to have South African super heroes. Koerberg Nuclear Power Station has a meltdown and the population around it is forced to flee. A few unlucky people don't and the fallout endows them with enhanced super powers which they use to defeat evil. A good possibility would also be a fantasy adventure based on various South African myths from all cultures. The myths would all have a supernatural edge to them and a group of oddball characters would work together to defeat evil supernatural forces.

Hmmm...maybe a documentary of what we South Africans do, how we live, etc. Just pure SA culture.

I'd have a comedy about a coloured Vampire.... How people would react to it and alles... imagine a Vampire with a coloured accent and a couple of zulu ones too? That would be too nice!!!

SA is a country with breathtaking scenery and also well developed cities, great beaches..etc, so i would make a movie which includes visiting many cities and scenaries to change the minds of ignorant and narrow minded people of the first world who think that the entire african continent is rural and only has wars, famines and starving people. I would highlight the main "must see" places such as Sun city, Cape Town, Kruger National Park, the kalahari, Durban and Pretoria. Maybe it would be an action or thriller movie where a US spy or agent goes to South Africa to find out about a virus which will affect all the major supercomputers around the world.

A sports movie where you have a cricket team that say goes to the u20 world-cup we follow how the guys struggle and put aside their differences to get to the top something inspirational throw in some quotas system issues, girlfriend problem or even boyfriend problems, fathers getting retrenched, single parent homes, child headed homes, issues of language in the field and the star player gets hi jacked in his township and shot in the arm he can't play the world cup and the introvert of the team rises to the occasion. And the media must always be against them because that's how our media is and they must prove them wrong. I sad cricket since cricket is the biggest inter racial sport in the country its a fact. I don't know I think there more issues that affect young people in modern SA like drugs, teenage pregnancy etr. I like the "Coloured Vampire Though" that would be funny.

A Western would be good as there is old towns with the original wooden ''False Fronted'' buildings and side walks.. Also the terrain is ideal suited for that...isolated and rugged....untouched..and desolate area's... Or in the line of Crocodile Dundee...You can call it ''Likkewaan Labuschagne'' Pls not Political movies...its boring and old hat !!

I think a serious (and original) Horror film would be a welcome change. Something that would leave a lasting effect like a "The Shining," "Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Amytyville Horror". It seems that all the movies being created are poor imitations of previously successful overseas movies, simply given an African flavour and from there anything original is slapstick commedy.

recently i was approached by a local filmmaker who wants to buy the rights to one of the books i have written, in order to make a movie out of it. the book revolves around a group of people in johannesburg, over a period of a week, and how their lives cross each others'. it's about drugs, sex, HIV, and corruption. but the underlying theme is one of redemption and justice. strangely enough, it sold just over 350 000 copies overseas, but 6 publishers locally told me that it would not sell, because it was too graphic, too violent, and unrealistic. all of the characters and situations in the book are based on real people, and most of the situations are real events that actually happened. in fact, most of the drug related scenes are events that happened to me while i was still using drugs. you asked what kind of film i would make? i'd make a film based on reality, but it seems that reality is just too unbelievable for south africans.
